In Alberta, you have the right to have your vehicle’s damage estimated and repaired at the auto body shop of your choice. An insurance company cannot require that your vehicle be repaired at a specific repair shop, they can and often will make shop recommendations to you.
Insurance companies have a vested interest in referring you to one of their vendors because it reduces their administrative work and they also receive special rates for customer’s going to a referred auto body shop.
Your insurance company cannot refuse your claim by choosing your own body shop, taking the time to research and select a reputable shop can save you time, money, and potential long-term issues with your car.
